Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to the most common questions about Udyam Registration, the application process and certificate.

“Udyam” is derived from the Hindi word “उद्यम,” commonly associated with an undertaking or enterprise. In India’s MSME framework, Udyam is the name used for the Government of India’s system for recognising eligible Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). It replaced the earlier Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) registration system.
Udyam Registration is the Government of India’s online process for recognising an eligible enterprise as a Micro, Small or Medium Enterprise (MSME). The process uses Aadhaar authentication and relevant enterprise information, including PAN and GST-linked information where applicable. Once registration is successfully completed, the enterprise receives a permanent Udyam Registration Number and an electronic certificate. The certificate records the enterprise’s MSME registration; eligibility for any particular loan, subsidy, tender or other benefit remains subject to the relevant scheme or institution’s rules.
Udyam Registration gives an eligible enterprise formal recognition under India’s MSME framework and a permanent Udyam Registration Number. This recognition may help the enterprise access MSME-focused schemes, credit facilities, public procurement opportunities and delayed-payment protections where the relevant eligibility conditions are met. Registration through the official government portal is online, paperless and free of charge.
Banks and other lenders may ask for a Udyam Registration Certificate to confirm that a business is recognised as an MSME and to assess eligibility under relevant lending products under CGTSME or other government-supported schemes. However, registration alone does not guarantee loan approval, collateral-free finance, a lower interest rate or faster processing. The lender’s policies, applicable scheme, business finances and credit profile will also be considered.
Depending on the applicable scheme and eligibility conditions, a registered MSME may be able to access MSME-focused credit facilities, credit-guarantee programmes, certain subsidies or support initiatives, public procurement opportunities and other government programmes. Eligible micro and small enterprises may also be able to seek remedies under the delayed-payment provisions of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development (MSMED) Act, 2006. Udyam Registration does not automatically entitle every enterprise to every benefit; the relevant scheme or law applies.
Under section 15 of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development (MSMED) Act, 2006, a buyer must pay a qualifying micro or small enterprise supplier by the date agreed in writing; the agreed period cannot exceed 45 days from acceptance or deemed acceptance of goods or services. Where there is no written agreement, the statutory appointed-day rules apply. If payment is delayed, section 16 provides for compound interest with monthly rests at three times the bank rate notified by the Reserve Bank of India, subject to the Act. The mechanism does not apply to every category of MSME or every activity; the supplier must meet the applicable requirements.
A person intending to establish or operating an eligible micro, small or medium enterprise may apply through the official Udyam Registration portal. The framework covers eligible enterprises engaged in manufacturing, services and other activities recognised under applicable rules. An applicant may operate as a proprietorship, partnership, LLP, company or another eligible form of organisation. The enterprise must meet the applicable MSME classification and registration requirements.
From 1 April 2025, MSME classification is based on both investment in plant and machinery or equipment and annual turnover. An enterprise must satisfy both limits for its category: Micro — investment not more than ₹2.5 crore and turnover not more than ₹10 crore; Small — investment not more than ₹25 crore and turnover not more than ₹100 crore; Medium — investment not more than ₹125 crore and turnover not more than ₹500 crore. Classification is subject to applicable government rules and information available through linked databases.
An enterprise with Udyam Registration may apply for MSME finance from a bank, NBFC or other lender offering a suitable product. Approval depends on the lender’s eligibility criteria, the business’s financial position, credit history, repayment capacity, proposed use of funds and any government-backed scheme conditions. Udyam Registration may establish MSME status, but it does not guarantee loan sanction or particular terms.
“Udyam Aadhaar”, although discontinued since 30th June 2022, is often used informally, but the current system issues a Udyam Registration Number and Udyam Registration Certificate, not a new “Udyam Aadhaar card”. Aadhaar is required, and the relevant Aadhaar holder depends on the enterprise type—for example, the proprietor for a proprietorship, the managing partner for a partnership and the karta for a Hindu Undivided Family. Companies, LLPs and other specified entities must follow the portal’s requirements for the organisation or authorised signatory, including PAN and GSTIN where applicable. Existing Udyog Aadhaar holders should use the official portal’s process for moving to Udyam.
Yes. A start-up may apply for Udyam Registration if the enterprise meets the applicable MSME classification and registration requirements. Start-up recognition under a separate government programme and Udyam Registration are different processes, so one status does not automatically confer the other.
Freelancers and consultants carrying on an eligible business or service activity may apply for Udyam Registration if the enterprise meets applicable MSME requirements. Eligibility depends on the nature of the activity and the rules in force; registration is not automatic merely because someone works as a freelancer or consultant.
The official Udyam process is paperless and does not generally require applicants to upload supporting documents. Aadhaar is required, and PAN and GSTIN details must be provided or validated where applicable to the enterprise. The portal may request business and financial details used to identify the enterprise and determine its classification. Applicants should enter accurate information and follow the current portal requirements for their entity type.
Yes. Aadhaar authentication is a required part of Udyam Registration. The Aadhaar holder depends on the type of enterprise—for example, the proprietor in a proprietorship, the managing partner in a partnership, or the karta in a Hindu Undivided Family. For a company, LLP or another specified entity, follow the official portal’s requirements for the organisation or authorised signatory and related PAN/GSTIN details. Complete the verification steps shown by the portal.
Aadhaar authentication is a required step in Udyam Registration, and the applicant must complete the verification requested by the official portal, which may include OTP validation. The OTP is used for authentication and should be handled securely by the Aadhaar holder. Do not share an OTP unless you understand and intend to authorise the specific transaction. A service provider cannot bypass government authentication requirements.
PAN is required under the applicable Udyam Registration rules, with the precise details and validation process depending on the enterprise type. For companies, LLPs and other specified entities, the official portal requires PAN and GSTIN along with the relevant Aadhaar details, subject to applicable GST law and notified requirements. PAN-linked information may be used to verify enterprise and financial details. Follow the current instructions on the official portal.
PAN helps identify the enterprise or relevant person in government records and supports verification of financial information used in the MSME registration process. The Udyam system uses information available through linked government databases, including tax-related information, to help determine classification. Applicants should ensure that the PAN details entered or validated through the portal are accurate and relate to the correct enterprise or person as required by the rules.
GST registration is not required of every business under GST law, but GSTIN must be provided for Udyam Registration where the enterprise is legally required to obtain GST registration and the applicable Udyam rules require it. The portal may use GST-linked information when determining enterprise details and classification. Whether a business must register under GST depends on the applicable GST law and its circumstances; Udyam Registration does not itself create a general exemption from GST obligations.
Applicants should follow the current official Udyam form and provide the information it requires for their enterprise. Bank details may be requested as part of enterprise information and can be important when dealing with lenders or receiving payments and scheme benefits. Do not enter another person’s bank details or inaccurate information simply to complete an application. If the business does not yet have an account in its own name, confirm the appropriate entry with the official portal or a qualified adviser before submitting the form.
Do not enter bank details that are inaccurate or do not meet the official form’s requirements. The appropriate approach can depend on the enterprise type; a proprietorship and a company may be treated differently. Check the current Udyam portal instructions or obtain advice from a qualified professional before submitting the application. If the portal permits the relevant account details for your enterprise type, ensure the information is correct and update it through the prescribed process if it later changes. A proprietor may enter his/ her saving account details for UDYAM registration.
Udyam Registration is completed through the official Government of India portal. In general, the applicant selects the appropriate registration option, completes Aadhaar authentication, provides or validates PAN and GSTIN details where applicable, enters the requested enterprise information and submits the required declarations. Review the details before submission and complete any verification steps shown by the portal. After successful registration, the portal issues the Udyam Registration Number and electronic certificate. The official registration process is free.
There is no government fee for filing Udyam Registration through the official Government of India portal. A private business may separately charge for optional assistance or related professional services, but those charges are not a government registration fee and do not make the private website an official government portal. Applicants can register directly through the official portal at no cost.
The Udyam Registration Certificate is issued electronically through the official Udyam Registration system of the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Government of India, after successful registration. It contains the enterprise’s Udyam Registration Number and a dynamic QR code that can be used to access registration details through the government portal.
After registration is successfully completed on the official portal, the enterprise is assigned a permanent Udyam Registration Number and an electronic Udyam Registration Certificate. The certificate includes a dynamic QR code for checking the enterprise’s details through the government portal. Keep the registration information accurate and update it when required under the applicable process. Udyam Registration does not require annual renewal, so an annual update should not be described as mandatory renewal.
A Udyam Registration Number (URN) is the permanent identifier assigned to an enterprise after successful Udyam Registration. It generally begins with “UDYAM-” followed by a state-related code and further identifying characters or digits. Use the number exactly as shown on the official certificate when dealing with government departments, lenders or other organisations. For the precise interpretation of each part of a number, refer to the details displayed on the official portal rather than relying on an illustrative code alone.
The Udyam Registration Certificate is evidence that the enterprise has been registered under the Udyam system. It displays key registration information, including the Udyam Registration Number and enterprise details, and includes a dynamic QR code for online verification through the official portal. Banks, buyers, government departments and other organisations may request the certificate when assessing MSME status, but their own scheme or transaction requirements continue to apply.
Udyam Registration does not require periodic renewal and is not issued with a routine annual expiry date. However, enterprises should keep their information accurate and comply with applicable requirements for updating details and classification. Changes in investment, turnover or other enterprise information may affect MSME classification under the rules in force. Keeping records accurate is different from annual renewal.
Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) was the earlier MSME registration system. Udyam Registration replaced that system and assigns a permanent Udyam Registration Number with an electronic certificate. Enterprises holding an older UAM or other earlier MSME registration should use the applicable process on the official portal to move to Udyam, rather than assuming that the old registration is the same as a current Udyam certificate.
They can be different. The registered or official address identifies the enterprise’s principal address for registration purposes, while a unit may refer to a location where the enterprise conducts business activities, such as a factory, branch or service location. The details to be entered depend on the enterprise’s structure and the fields provided in the official form. Ensure that addresses and unit information are reported accurately.
No. The official Udyam guidance states that an enterprise should not file more than one Udyam Registration. Multiple activities, including manufacturing and services, may be included or added under the same registration as permitted by the portal. If an enterprise already has a registration, check whether the record needs to be updated or corrected instead of filing a duplicate application.
Udyam rules do not permit an enterprise to file more than one Udyam Registration. The official guidance allows multiple activities, including manufacturing and services, to be included under one registration. The rule should be understood in terms of the enterprise’s registration, rather than as a blanket statement that every person or Aadhaar holder can never be associated with another enterprise in any capacity. Check the official portal’s instructions for the particular entity and applicant.
Before seeking cancellation, check the current official portal process and consider whether an update or correction would address the issue instead. Cancellation may affect the enterprise’s recorded MSME status and its ability to rely on benefits or schemes that require a valid Udyam Registration. The consequences depend on the circumstances and the relevant scheme or legal provision. Do not assume cancellation is necessary simply because business details have changed; use the prescribed update process where appropriate.
Apparently NOT Mandatory but Technically YES. The recently passed MSME Development (Amendment) Bill, 2026 has mandated all the CPSEs to settle the invoice payments through TReDS Platform only. So, if you are supplying goods or services to Central Government Department or organisation, then all your payments shall be made through TReDS. Thus, you are indirectly mandated to register on TReDS Portal.
